luna Sleep Journal
Privacy Policy
luna is a journal, not a tracker – and its privacy works the same way. This page explains exactly what that means.
1. Information We Collect
luna is built to know as little about you as possible. It collects only what you put in and what it needs to work.
1.1 Information You Provide
- Your nights. For each night: the date, the time you turned off the light (bedtime) and the time you woke up. That is the core of the journal.
- About you. The nickname you choose, an optional age group, and which days you tend to sleep in – to measure your social jet lag.
- Sleep Buddy. If you connect with a buddy: your six-character luna code, your buddy's code and display name, and the state of your connection.
- Buddy moments. If you use the buddy features: goodnight taps, bedtime guesses ("Peek"), a curiosity nudge ("Night nudge"), short voice notes ("Night letter"), and recorded answers to shared questions ("Time Capsule").
- App settings. Your chosen time ranges for the Analysis view and similar preferences.
1.2 Information We Do Not Collect
Unlike most apps, luna collects nothing about you automatically. There is no usage or analytics data, no device identifiers, and no log data – we do not record how you use the app, what device you are on, or your IP address. luna also stores no photos, no written diary text, no location, no contacts, no advertising identifiers, and no sleep "quality", heart rate, or audio analysis. luna measures only when you slept and how steadily – nothing a phone cannot honestly know.
1.3 Apple Health (optional)
Reading. If you choose it – during onboarding or later in the app – luna can import your past bedtime and wake-up times from Apple Health to save you typing. This is entirely opt-in, you control which data is shared in iOS Settings, and luna reads nothing else from Health. Imported times are treated exactly like times you enter yourself and are never sent onward to anyone.
Writing. Separately, and off by default, you can let luna write the nights you log to Apple Health – again only bedtime and wake-up, saved as a sleep entry with luna as its source. When you switch this on, luna adds the nights already in your journal that Health does not yet have from any other source. If you change or delete a night in luna, luna updates or removes its own entry in Health; entries from other apps or devices are never touched. Switching it off stops new entries; the nights already written stay in Health until you remove them there, and deleting your luna data does not delete them either. Health data is used only for this – it is never uploaded to us or shared with anyone, and it is not used for advertising or sold.
2. How We Use Your Information
We use what luna stores only to run the journal for you – never to profile you or build a picture of you across apps or websites. Specifically, to:
- keep your nights and settings, and sync them across your own devices;
- run the Sleep Buddy features you switch on (see §3.1);
- send the notifications you allow (see §6.3);
- process your subscription through the App Store (see §3.2).
3. How We Share Your Information
3.1 With Your Sleep Buddy
luna lets you pair with one person you trust. Connecting is done by exchanging six-character codes. Once connected, and only then, the following is shared between the two of you through iCloud:
- your recent nights (bedtime and wake-up) so you can see each other's rhythm;
- goodnight taps and bedtime guesses;
- voice "Night letters", which are deleted automatically after 24 hours;
- recorded "Time Capsule" answers, which unseal to both of you on a chosen night.
Your buddy sees only what these features show – not your account, your settings, or anything else. Either of you can end the pact at any time, which stops the sharing.
3.2 Apple's Frameworks
luna contains no analytics SDKs, no advertising, no crash-tracking third parties, and no AI services. The app talks only to Apple's own frameworks:
- iCloud / CloudKit – to store and sync your journal and buddy data.
- StoreKit – to handle your subscription through the App Store. It is sold and processed by Apple; we never see or store your card details, and Apple shares with us only aggregate, non-identifying sales information.
- HealthKit – only if you choose to import from or write to Apple Health (see §1.3).
- Apple Push Notifications – to deliver buddy events and reminders (see §6.3).
3.3 Legal Requirements
Because your journal lives in your device and your own private iCloud – not on any luna-operated server – we hold no database of your nights to hand over. In practice there is nothing for us to disclose to a public authority.
3.4 We Never Sell Your Data
We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal data – to anyone. There is no advertising business behind luna. The app is funded by its subscription, not by your data.
4. Data Storage and Security
Your journal is stored on your device and, so it survives a new phone and stays in sync, in your own private iCloud. This is your personal Apple storage: it is governed by Apple's Privacy Policy, and we cannot browse it like a normal web company browses a database.
Because luna uses iCloud sync, your data is not "offline only" – it moves between your devices through Apple's infrastructure. But it is never sent to a luna-operated server, and never to a third-party analytics or advertising company.
5. Data Retention
Your journal stays as long as you keep it. You are always in control:
- Night letters delete themselves 24 hours after they are sent.
- Deleting your data in the app removes it immediately and permanently – from your device, from your private iCloud, and from the buddy directory – and cannot be undone.
- Deleting the app, or signing out of iCloud, stops syncing.
- Nights luna wrote to Apple Health (if you switched that on) live in Health, not in luna – you remove them in the Health app, and Apple Health's own rules apply to them.
6. Your Rights and Choices
6.1 Access and Update
You can view and change your nights, your profile, and your settings at any time in the app.
6.2 Delete Your Data
You can delete your data at any time in the app. This removes it immediately and permanently from your device, your private iCloud, and the buddy directory, and cannot be undone.
6.3 Notifications
If you allow notifications, luna uses Apple Push Notifications to let you know about buddy moments (a goodnight, a dream, a capsule ready to open) and any gentle logging reminder you switch on. You can turn these off any time in iOS Settings.
7. Children's Privacy
luna is not directed at children and is intended for users aged 13 and older. If you are in the EU, you may need a parent or guardian's consent if you are under 16. We do not knowingly collect data from children below the applicable age.
8. International Data Transfers
luna itself operates no servers and transfers your data nowhere. Because your journal lives in your own iCloud, its storage is handled entirely by Apple and may be processed on Apple infrastructure in different countries, as described in Apple's Privacy Policy.
9. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new Privacy Policy in the App and updating the "Effective date" above. Your continued use of the App after changes are posted constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.
